BlackBerry security exploit released to public

A security consultant who made a presentation about insecurities of the BlackBerry platform at an annual hacking conference has released his code to the public. Dubbed 'BlackBerry Attack Toolkit' the software demonstrates how code on a BlackBerry could theoretically pose a security risk to internal corporate networks. The hack makes a BlackBerry act as a proxy server between internal LAN servers and an attacker controlled computer on the internet.

Disney shelves plan for UK MVNO

Disney has cancelled its plans to launch a UK version of Disney Mobile. The company had announced the plan back in April before the official launch of Disney Mobile in the US market. The Telegraph reports:

Disney blamed a difficult retail market for its decision. It said: "Distribution outlets have been consolidating and there is now increased competition. However, we will keep one eye on the landscape.

Alltel has announced a deal to distribute some of XM Satellite Radio's commercial-free channels over cell phones.

For a $7.99 month flat fee, customers can gain unlimited access audio streams of 20 popular commercial-free XM music channels including: The 70s, 80s and 90s decades channels, Top 20 on 20 (Top 20 Hits), Ethel (New Alternative Rock), The City (Hip-Hop/R&B Hits), XMU (Indie Rock), Bluesville (Blues), Highway 16 (New Country Hits), and Viva (Latin Pop Hits).

Sprint to carry audio of every MLB game

Baseball fans will soon be able to use their cell phones to take them out to the ballgame. Sprint Nextel today announced an agreement with Major League Baseball to make audio of radio broadcasts available to its subscribers' mobile phones for $5.99 a month.

Under the deal, local flagship station broadcasts will be available for all 30 teams for each game.

Second quarter 2006 mobile handset marketshare

While this information was made available previously through individual quarterly statements, iSuppli has put all the sales data and market share figures into one place.

The big winners are Motorola and Sony Ericsson, both were able to outpace competitors' growth. Samsung saw the biggest dip in unit sales, but didn't drop a ranking in marketshare (unlike LG).

T-Mobile USA makes presence known in AWS auction

T-Mobile USA quickly emerged as the top bidder in the advanced wireless services (AWS) auction which began earlier today. The carrier is in desperate need of spectrum to be able to launch 3G service, something that all three of its national competitors have already done.

After the first round of bidding $769m was put on the table. Of that T-Mobile claimed $437m, making up more than half of the total auction.

Sprint Nextel to Build 4G Network Using WiMax

Sprint Nextel announced today that it plans to use WiMax technology to power its next-generation high-speed wireless network.

The Sprint Nextel 4G mobility network will use the company's extensive 2.5 GHz spectrum holdings, which cover 85 percent of the households in the top 100 U.S. markets.

To access that network, Sprint Nextel will work with Intel, Motorola and Samsung to incorporate WiMAX technology for advanced wireless communications and help make chipsets widely available for new consumer electronics devices.

Photos of a T-Mobile branded BlackBerry 8100 have found there way onto several websites. The photos confirm Research In Motion's move into multimedia is coming soon. The 8100 is not your conventional BlackBerry, there's even a camera.

Known features of the BlackBerry 8100 include:

  • EDGE high-speed data
  • Bluetooth
  • microSD card slot
  • Camera (resolution unknown)
  • Support for various multimedia; including photos, music, video and ringtones.
