Verizon Wireless ships ExpressCard style EV-DO card

Verizon Wireless has started to ship the Novatel Wireless V640 ExpressCard/34. Previously the company only sold data cards in the older PCMCIA format and owners of notebooks with the new ExpressCard slot were out of luck. The card is available now and will be in retail stores starting August 24. It retails for $179.99/$229.99 with a two or one year service agreement respectively.

Nearly half the size of standard PC Cards, Novatel Wireless' V640 is a compact and convenient product for mobile notebook users, featuring plug-n- play so that the ExpressCard can be plugged in or removed at any time.

Sprint Accelerates EV-DO Revision A Upgrade

Sprint today announced an accelerated schedule to begin its roll out of the upgraded technology known as EV-DO Revision A during 4Q 2006 with coverage expected to reach more than 40 million people by year end.

With EV-DO Revision A, users will experience faster average download speeds of 450 - 800 kbps; and average upload speeds of 300 - 400 kbps. These data rates can enable richer applications and services such as high-speed video telephony, music on demand, video messaging, large file uploads and high performance push-to-talk capability.

Samsung Unveils SGH-Z560 Slim HSDPA Phone

Samsung today announced the SGH-Z560, the latest slim handset to support high-speed HSDPA connectivity for up to 1.8 Mbps data throughput.

With a depth of mere 16 mm, the handset includes advanced features such as a 2.0-megapixel camera with auto focus, external touch music keys, 30 MB of internal memory, and microSD external memory slot. While slim, the Z560 uses a large 2.3-inch QVGA 262K-color LCD to ensure a clear and sharp screen image.

Motorola and Burton Launch New Wearable Electronics

Following the success of Audex Bluetooth Jacket Series, Motorola and Burton Snowboards today announced the expansion of their wearable electronics collection, enabling easy wireless communication and music entertainment from snowboard apparel.

New for 2007, the Audex Bluetooth Stereo System streams downloaded music wirelessly from a Bluetooth-enabled phone to an Audex jacket. Users can listen to music and make calls with a push of a button on the jacket sleeve and includes built-in DJ-style speakers in the hood and/or an integrated headphone jack.

Patent May Allow In-Flight Cell Phone Use

ASiQ announced today that it has applied for a patent that allows cell phones to be operated in-flight, without interfering with the aircraft's avionics and the ground networks.

The unit is attached to the cell phone via a standard Bluetooth or cable connection. Compatible with all cell phone networks, GSM, CDMA, UMTS and EDGE, the device communicates via the existing certified aviation communications networks and reduces data delivery cost as it does not rely on the cellular roaming network for transmission.

Motorola Q2 2006 earnings depends on RAZR sales

Motorola's second quarter earnings continued to get a big boost from hot sales of the Motorola RAZR. Revenue for the quarter increased 29% while profit jumped 48%. Motorola didn't break down sales for any of its individual models.

  • Global marketshare is at 22%, up 4% over the year

Cingular posts strong second quarter

Cingular posted a strong second quarter as the company continues to see gains from its merger with AT&T Wireless. While revenue increased only a modest 7%, profit spiked 267% to a record $540 million. Cingular remains the largest carrier in the US, with 57.3 million customers.
