Nokia Q2 2006, growing everywhere but US

Nokia's second quarter earnings statement shows strong handset sales growth in almost every market besides North America. In North America Nokia's handset shipments decreased 13.3% to just 5.2 million. Latin America was flat, all other markets saw double digit increases.

Key figures:

  • Estimated market share of 34%, up from 33% a year ago
  • Total device shipments hit 78.

Cingular to Launch Sony Ericsson Z525a

Cingular Wireless has launched the Sony Ericsson Z525a, using it to replace the Z520a which it launched last year. The update simply adds push-to-talk.

Features of the Z525a include:

  • Push-to-talk
  • VGA camera
  • Bluetooth
  • 16 MB user memory
  • 128x160 pixel screen with 65K colors
  • GSM 850/900/1800/1900

Cingular is selling the Z525a for $19.

Whirlpool Tests 'Smart' Washers Controlled by Cell Phones

Whirlpool today began testing "smart" washing machines and dryers, monitored and controled from computers and cell phones.

The pilot project, called "Laundry Time," part of an open collaboration involving some of the nation's top technology and consumer products companies including Whirlpool Corporation, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, Panasonic and Procter & Gamble.

To be conducted in Atlanta homes between today and early September, Laundry Time is built around a connected laundry solution that links a washer and dryer to a home network and sends text messages about the laundry's progress to a computer, TV and/or cell phone.

Samsung Mass Produces 8 GB Flash Memory

Samsung today announced that it has begun mass producing an 8 GB NAND flash memory device, providing a much larger and more affordable storage density for consumer and mobile applications such as mobile phones, MP3 players and gaming consoles.

The newest technology offers 25 percent higher production efficiencies over the previous 70 nm technology and also follows the introduction of 80-nm technology for DDR2 DRAM chips in March 2005, it said.

RIM betting on media features to boost sales

Research In Motion is betting that the addition of more multimedia features to its BlackBerry handheld line will help the company continue its strong growth. While the email functionality of BlackBerry is market leading, the devices have a more limited approach to multimedia than other smartphones.

"We'll be definitely supporting more forms of media, it's a big part of our direction," Jim Balsillie told Reuters, adding that delivering features such as photography, music and video with the BlackBerry "opens up some bigger markets".

Water-Powered Cell Phones from Japan

NTT DoCoMo and Aquafairy announced today that they agreed to jointly develop a micro fuel cell for 3G FOMA handsets. This agreement follows their successful development of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) that has proven effective in a prototype recharger.

The fuel cell is the smallest in the world with power output of 2 watts. The recharger combines DoCoMo's recharger technology with Aquafairy's thin film power unit technology and catalyst for producing hydrogen from water.
