LG CU500 Launched for New Cingular 3G Service

Cingular Wireless today launched the LG CU500 3G phone to take advantage of its new high-speed wireless network in San Antonio.

The Cingular 3G network uses HSDPA/UMTS (High Speed Downlink Packet Access/Universal Mobile Telephone System) technology, allowing customers to more quickly access email, browse the internet, connect to business applications, or watch video clips while on-the-go.

LG8500 Chocolate coming soon on Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless is now featuring the LG "Chocolate" 8500 handset on its homepage, noting that it will be for sale soon. The slide style phone will be an exclusive to Verizon Wireless. Not much information was revealed, but music will be a central theme for the handset. A launch date for the handset was not given, but previous reports pointed to a release later this month.

HTC and NTT DoCoMo announce Z smartphone

HTC and NTT DoCoMo announce Z smartphone

NTT DoCoMo jointly developed a new smartphone with HTC which is set to debut later this month. The hTc Z is a Windows Mobile smartphone and will be one of the first devices marketed under the HTC brand (previously the company used OEM deals to have their products branded by other companies).

Features of the hTz Z include:

  • Windows Mobile 5.0 Japanese edition
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • Bluetooth
  • microSD card slot
  • 240x320 screen with 65K colors
  • 2 megapixel camera

The Z will be marketed primarily to business customers starting late this month.

Palm to Offer 3G Treo in Europe

Palm to Offer 3G Treo in Europe

Palm today announced it will market a version of its Treo smartphone in Europe through Britain's Vodafone Group Plc. in hopes of resolving technical problems with a previous model.

The latest Treo will operate on Vodafone's high-speed third generation (3G) network and be powered by Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system. The new Treo smartphone will be available first to Vodafone customers in multiple European countries, including the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy and Netherlands, before the end of the calendar year.

Motorola Opens Flagship Store in Shanghai

Motorola today opened a flagship retail outlet in downtown Shanghai. The outlet is the first of four planned for China and follows the launch of 50 smaller Motorola-branded retail locations over the past three months.

Motorola has spent the last two years deeply engaged in a global research and development effort around the new retail concept, and as a result has come up with an approach that is centered around the consumer.

Cingular Launches Mini-HBO Series for Cell Phones

Cingular Wireless said on Wednesday that cable channel HBO has produced a special mobile mini-series based on the popular show "Entourage" that extends the story beyond what is shown on television.

The premise of the made-for-mobile "Entourage" story is Johnny Drama makes a "cellivision" show. Customers can view a series of short vignettes based on this premise as they continue to enjoy the adventures of the friends from Queens on the Hollywood road to fame and fortune.

Symbian Ltd. announced the availability of the latest evolution of the company's smartphone operating system. Building on the success of the v9 family as a robust, secure, open and standards-based OS for smartphones, Symbian OS v9.3 includes incremental enhancements to phone performance and reducing time-to-market for handset vendors.

Symbian OS v9.3 is fully backwards compatible with previous versions in the v9 family.

Nokia 3250 surpasses 1m units sold

The music-centric Nokia 3250 has hit the 1 million units shipped milestone. It began shipping just four months ago, making the figure all the more impressive. The 3250 is a S60 3rd edition smartphone with the addition of music control keys.

Other features include:

  • microSD card slot
  • Music player with support for MP3, WMA, M4A and AAC
  • 2 megapixel camera

Initial sales figures for Nokia's other music themed handset, the N91, have not been released.

Cingular Wireless launched the entry-level Motorola C139 today. It's available only as a pre-paid handset, through Cingular's GoPhone program. The candybar style handset is light on features and focuses on price:

  • GSM 580/1900
  • 96 x 65 pixel screen with 65K colors
  • Weight of just 3oz
  • Battery life estimated at 11 hours talk, 18 days standby

The Motorola C139 is being offered at $39.

Sprint To Launch Sanyo Katana Ultra-Thin Clamshell

Sanyo today announced the launch of the Sanyo Katana, an ultra-thin, affordable phone designed to appeal to fashion-centric consumers.

Making its debut throughout the month of July in four bold colors, including Mystic Black, Blue Sapphire, Cherry Blossom Pink, and Polar White (a color sold exclusively at RadioShack), the Katana will be available at Sprint Stores, online and at select third-party retailers for $279.
