Verizon announced that next year it will allow using any phones on its network, including those, which are not available directly from them. The company will publish technical standards for hardware developers who will use them to create phones for its network, and any device that meets the minimum requirements set by Verizon will be certified and activated for usage. Non-Verizon handsets will support additional third-party software and applications. The company's existing retail sales model will not change. All willing will still be able to buy Verizon handsets and services like they do today.
