Nokia Buys Symbian, Makes it Open Source

Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DoCoMo in partnership with AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone have formed the Symbian Foundation, a non-profit organization with the aim of merging Symbian OS, S60, UIQ and MOAP to build one unified open source mobile software platform.

With this purpose Nokia will aquire Symbian and give its software to the Foundation. In addition, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and DoCoMo will also contribute their own assets. The companies believe that creating an advanced unified open source platform will lead to increased innovation in this field.
