Nokia 6111 Review

28 Oct 2006

Nokia 6111 is the first slider of the Finnish manufacturer Nokia, if not to take into account not a very successful 7650 model, after which Nokia postponed this form-factor for a long period. 6111 is not a pioneering project anymore, but is rather like an answer to the Korean manufacturers. The answer is more than a Roland for an Oliver. The device is considered to be a low-end in the line of sliders, it is functionally weakly equipped, and at the same time it has a minimum size.

The handset is small, it is easy to hold in a hand especially in the woman's one. Its size is 844723 mm , weigh 92 gr . For reference, its rival D500 has got a larger size (93.5x45.7x23.5 mm, 99 gr.). However, 6111 is rather thickish thou it doesn't preclude carrying it. Case is made of plastic . Back plate and face plate are made leek, the plastic is harsh and dull at the sides of the phone. Although the design of the device is consists of the free lines, its style being rather strict then original. 6111 is oriented as for men as well as for women. The quality of the case is at the high level, only the open halves a little slop vertically, but it is sooner a nip it is not so observable during everyday using.

The keypad is also made of plastic, the navigation block is comfortable, but number keys are a little hard to press although the size of the keys is comfortable, the surface being sufficient. Highlighting is uneven (figure "2" is highlighted better, in the dark it a little "strike the eye"), but all the keys are clearly seen on the screen.

The handset's screen is one of its weakest parts. Resolution is rather old - 120 x 160 pixels, a short diagonal line for this class. Look-up angles are not bad, though in some cases the dark shades invert. Nevertheless the brightness is good and the grain is not big. The screen can hold up to six lines of the text and three service lines, the size of the font is rather big, it can be easily read. The picture is satisfactory, though it concedes the Korean rivals.

Interface connector and charger connector are placed at the top of the lower half of the slider. They are slightly covered with a tip up plastic top, stereo out included in the kit is connected namely here, consequently the size of the device increases, and this is a disadvantage. Also here is place a red bar holder and by pressing it you get access to the accumulator. SIM-card is placed in other place, just at the back of the top half of the handset.

The device is built on the platform of Nokia Series 40 3rd Edition. The platform is new and is one of the top-rank market supplies. By it side can be placed except for developing Linux and new Sony Ericsson interfaces (with a bit of ifs).

A different matter is that in the device this platform is a little modified, in greater degree to the reason of low display resolution. Some elements are worse, than in models with QQVGA and QVGA-screens, however, for the average segment of the rivals this solution has few (speaking of the interface) if not to say that it even doesn't have at all.

The menu itself has two representations: the list (herewith each item has a respective icon) and the grid (at one time there are 9 icons on the screen, if the menu has more that 9 you will have to use the scroll). All subitems are made in list. The icons doesn't look brindled (nor pale are they), everything is beautiful and fine. Also numerical order can help to speed up the navigation over the menu they are supported.

There is a possibility to turn on the active mode on the handset's screen while in the sleeping mode; it is an approximate analog of Today (active desktop Windows Mobile). Five icons are display on the screen, radio status, media player, time and data, existence of notes and reminders. It is convenient, not all the manufacturers have such a feature. When "Today" is off the tasks, "hold" at the different position of the joystick don't work.

The handset has 23 Mb memory, there are no support of memory cards. But don't forget Nokia 6111 is equipped with megapixel camera . 23 can hold not a big amount of pictures. You will have permanently to download pictures to PC.

Phone Book

The maximum quantity of the contacts is 1000 (in case each contact has 1- 2 fields). If to fill in 5-7 fields, you will manage to save not more than 500 contacts. For one name you can input up to 5 phone numbers, choose type of the number (general, mobile, home, office, fax). Also you can input e-mail address to each number, postal address, and text note.

The handset supports SMS, MMS, and voice messages. Voice messages are simplified variant of MMS (record 3-6 sec. of speech and then send). Implementation of S is good, everything is clear and convenient. Writing an SMS is no trouble, everything is alike instinctively clear. Letter by letter input and 9 is available. Switching between the languages and input mode is performed from the menu, which is not very comfortable. Other possibilities of the manager are standard up to 150 messages, emoticon support, jointed messages. You can set message auto replacement in the folder SEND when memory overflow (the oldest messages are successively deleted). The device has built-in email client . The possibilities of the email client increased, all enclosures are supported that can be read by the device, for example, 3gp, MP3. There is no support of .ppt, .doc, .xls and .pdf.

Call register

Call register includes received\missed\dialled calls. While scrolling calls time and date are displayed. There is also a timer of the call which registers the duration of all dilled\received calls, the total duration of the conversation, as well as the time of the last call. There is also a counter traffic GPRS.

Here is timer, alarm clock (you can set 3 or radio signal), stop watch, remainders, calendar and calculator. Everything is rather standard here.

Here you can choose profile; also there is a speed menu for profile choosing. Their implementation in S40 is one of the best. There is a possibility to set profile for a fixed term, after that "By default" mode will be automatically set. You can set a sound for each event.

The handset has an automatic key lock; there is a possibility to set a special password, so that nobody could use your phone behind your back.

Here are all the folders which contain the files you have. For files loaded through IR-port or Bluetooth there is a separate folder, where all the files are put disregarding their type. There are several types of displaying: list, list with names and icons. Full-screen viewing is supported (for any graphic files, which open the phone).

Here you find items which administrate camera, radio, Dictaphone, audio and multimedia player. Let's begin with the camera. Not the most modern megapixel module is set up in Nokia 6111 (maximum resolution is 1154 x 864 pixels). If camera means a lot for you, than it would be better to pay your attention to some other models.

When taking pictures the quality is at the worthy level. However if pictures look attractively on the screen, then in my opinion, the quality is not so good when viewing them on the PC. The handset has also a possibility to shoot video with the resolution of 176 144 pixels. In my opinion the quality is more than average, this function is sooner the optional one, so it is nothing to be surprised at. The recording 3GP, there is no length limitation.

The Dictaphone supports recording during conversation. The maximum length of the record is 60 min.

Audio player

The player has got a possibility to play 3-tunes with different bitrate (including the high ones). Playback quality is good for the device of this class (as in headphone as well as through the speaker). The sound from the speaker deserves high praise, although basses are a bit "pressed", volume of sounds at the high level. The handset supports transmitting of the stereo sound via Bluetooth (you can use stereo Bluetooth handset).

The device can hold up to 20 radio stations; everything here is analogical to other Nokia phones. Receiving is good . The radio works only with the connected suite. It can be listened to in the handsfree mode. It can also be set as an alarm clock signal.

There are two folders in the menu "applications": games and collections. There are four applications in the subdivision game: backgammon, 3-D races, solitaire and golf simulator. The games are interesting and help to carry off some free time. The speed of the device is high, nothing "slows down", including work with 3D-graphics.

The device is equipped with supporting of GPRS, as well as EDGE (class 10). Handset synchronizing with PC is done through USB, by means of Bluetooth or IR-port. Nokia PS Suite program, included in the kit, allows making not only a backup copy of the phone book, upload games, pictures, melodies etc. to the phone, download pictures.

Bluetooth supports the following profiles: Hands-free, Headset, Object push profile, File transfer profile, Dial-up networking profile, Voice Gateway, A2DP. 1.1 Version. You can browse handset's memory from your PC. Transmission of any types of the files is supported, you can use Nokia 6111 as flash memory (if not to take into account not a big quantity of memory). Writing speed to the memory is high, about 70-80 kb/sec.

Advantages : nice exterior, pocket-size, megapixel camera, FM-radio, MP3-player with the high quality of the play back, new user interface, Bluetooth with stereo supporting (A2DP profile)

Disadvantages : a very weak display, lack of memory cards support at 23 Mb of internal buffer, imperfective mechanism of slider.

As a whole the device leaves you with pleasant impression. If not for a weak camera, not the best display and lack, the phone would be one of the best offers. Thus Nokia 6111 is just a qualitative mobile phone with high reception quality, loud speaker receiver, and not bad functionality. If you don't need memory cards and a big display, then, probably, this device is for you.
