Alltel announced it will soon release the BlackBerry 8130. The smartphone should be available just in time for the holiday season. Its features include an integrated GPS receiver, a 2Mpix camera, media player, Bluetooth connectivity, a 3.5mm headphone jack, voice recognition, trackball navigation, SureType keyboard and an external SDHC card slot.

Starting February 2008 Alltel will be offering a new free Parental Controls service, which will allow parents to filter unwanted web content on their children's mobile phones, including pornography, gambling, weapons and violence from their accounts on Alltel website. The service will be run by Bytemobile and will use the content filtering database and the dynamic rating feature to cover both new and unrated sites.

FCC has approved the sale of Alltel to two private investors TPG Capital and GS Capital Partners. The deal amounted to $24.7 billion with $71.50 per share. It should be closed by November 22.

Alltel is now offering its subscribers access to thousands of different Wi-Fi networks across the USA from their smartphones and notebooks. Available data plans include $10 per day, $20 per week or $30 per month. Customers can also bundle the Wi-Fi service with EV-DO wireless data for $69.
