Alltel Network to be Upgraded to Rev. A

Alltel will be upgrading its data network to EVDO Rev. A technology to speed up uploads. The carrier will start with 18 markets, including Charlotte, New Orleans, Phoenix and Tampa, and will be expanding from there further.

Laptop users will be the first to take advantage of the new speeds with Huawei EC228 USB and the UTStarcom UM 150 modems. The company will also allow owners of the HTC PPC6800 and HTC Touch smartphones to upgrade their devices to support EVDO Rev.

The yet unavailable GSM/HSDPA HTC Shift (Cleo 100) will also have a CDMA/EV-DO version.

It has passed the FCC a while ago under the name of Cleo 200, but still none of the versions was released.

We think HTC should rather launch the device itself instead of concentrating on its variations.

Verizon-Broadcom Deal allows for Continued Import of EV-DO phones in the U.S.

Verizon has licensed Broadcom's power-saving patents, thus allowing continued importing and launching of new EV-DO phones in the U.S, despite the ITC ban placed on June 7th on handsets with certain Qualcomm chips.

Verizon has agreed to pay Broadcom $6 per each unit with a maximum of $40 million per quarter and a lifetime cap of $200 million.

ANADIGICS releases 3G EVDO power amplifiers for Samsung u540

ANADIGICS, Inc began issuing of 3G EVDO power amplifiers for the Samsung SCH-u540 mobile phone. The phone supports AWT6307 EVDO HELP2(TM) for US cellular band and AWT6308 EVDO HELP2(TM) for US PCS band operation.

These PAs consume less power, thus offering more talk time to the user.

Verizon Wireless presents the Novatel V740 ExpressCard.

It’s the first card which operates on Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Revision A (Rev. A) technology. Thus using Rev. A technology this card runs faster and more efficiently. Customers can now enjoy upload speeds that are eight to nine times faster. Customers of the Novatel V740 ExpressCard are able to experience average download speeds of 600 kbps to 1.

EV-DO Rev A already launched by Sprint Nextel Corp.

Sprint Nextel Corp. has officially launched CDMA2000 1x EV-DO Revision A technology in San Diego market much sooner than it was initially expected. Also Sprint Nextel is going to come to 21 more markets by the end of the year. The faster network is supposed to increase revenues as well as improve new applications such as video telephony, multi-user video conferencing, real-time gaming, video streaming and high-performance push-to-talk service.

Verizon Wireless ships ExpressCard style EV-DO card

Verizon Wireless has started to ship the Novatel Wireless V640 ExpressCard/34. Previously the company only sold data cards in the older PCMCIA format and owners of notebooks with the new ExpressCard slot were out of luck. The card is available now and will be in retail stores starting August 24. It retails for $179.99/$229.99 with a two or one year service agreement respectively.

Nearly half the size of standard PC Cards, Novatel Wireless' V640 is a compact and convenient product for mobile notebook users, featuring plug-n- play so that the ExpressCard can be plugged in or removed at any time.

Sprint Accelerates EV-DO Revision A Upgrade

Sprint today announced an accelerated schedule to begin its roll out of the upgraded technology known as EV-DO Revision A during 4Q 2006 with coverage expected to reach more than 40 million people by year end.

With EV-DO Revision A, users will experience faster average download speeds of 450 - 800 kbps; and average upload speeds of 300 - 400 kbps. These data rates can enable richer applications and services such as high-speed video telephony, music on demand, video messaging, large file uploads and high performance push-to-talk capability.
