Mozilla "Fennec" alpha browser now available for Android and Nokia N900

Mozilla has issued alpha versions of its Firefox Mobile browser, better known as Fennec, for Nokia N900 and Android powered smartphones. Fennec for Android works on Android 2.0 or later and requires 30MB of available internal storage. There are both ARMv7 and ARMv5 CPU optimized builds available. Also, expect some bugs to occur, since its an alpha build.

Mozilla Germany announced that they are planning to release the first Beta of their Fennec browser for Android, which should be available in February. Expect comparisons to other browsers soon.

Firefox for Android?

According to CNET, Mozilla is planning to deliver its mobile Firefox (aka Fennec) browser to the Android OS. About a year ago Mozilla said that Java was too limited in terms of functionality, so they refused to use it, but since Google has recently announced the Android NDK (Native Development Kit) v1.0, which should enable developers to write programs running in the operating system’s Linux-based layer, they should have no problem compiling an Android version of the Fennec.

Firefox Mobile for HTC Touch Pro Coming next week?

WMExperts are reporting that the Firefox Mobile browser, codenamed Fennec, could become availailable for testing on the HTC Touch Pro. The device runs Windows Mobile, and all the browsers released for this platform turned out to be superior to the default Internet Explorer.

We'll see whether Fennec will be a good competitor to Safari or Opera.

Fennec for Windows Mobile

Fennec for Windows Mobile

It looks like the Mozilla Fennec browser has been ported to the Windows Mobile platform. Gnubeashie, the open source whiz, has managed to build the browser using its early source code, and has published a video of it running in the Windows Mobile 6.1 emulator. And running pretty fast, I must say. The UI is very nice and looks to be more functional than that in the official Alpha.

Fennec Alpha 2 Launched

Mozilla has released the second alpha of its Fennec mobile browser. They have slightly improved performance in panning, zooming and usability, and have also added “new content manipulation hooks for extension authors”. Hopefully they'll also add support for plugins. Unfortunately, the Alpha 2 is only available for the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, for now.
