According to users at Howard Forums, it appears that Verizon customers owning a BlackBery Pearl 8130 or Curve 8330 can unlock the GPS function on their handsets by upgrading their firmware to version 4.5.0.97. Unfortunately, it looks like BlackBerry Maps is the only application that's able to utilize the internal GPS, Google Maps don't work.

Because the OS version isn't officially supported by Verizon, it might be an intentional concession, or if it was a mistake.

Owners of the Nokia N85 can now update thir handsets to version 11.047 through the Nokia Software Updater. You can find the full change log below:

That's weird. Apparently the latest iPhone 2.2 firmware locks legally unlocked iPhones, which are currently available in Hong Kong and some European countries.

This issue was stated after a user from Germany bought an unlocked iPhone 3G in Hong Kong and updated it to version 2.2 back home. The handset has locked! And he is not alone who has such problem.

Apple should really look into this one to clarify the situation.

iPhone's latest SDK contains a programming class called MPTVOutWindow, which enables the iPhone's Video-Out function, thus allowing the handset to send a video signal through the Dock Connector to an external display. This feature supports both landscape and portrait viewing modes, and will obviously be geared towards movie viewing.

The accelerometer is recognized in Video-Out mode, though the touch input appears to be disabled.

Nokia has issued a new firmware update v110.07.127 for its E71-2 NAM handset.

This build will improve the device's overall stability, and will update Nokia Email, Mail For Exchange and Nokia Maps applications.

Before you apply the update don't forget to backup your data.

There are negative reports from users who have updated their iPhones to version 2.2. They say that iPhone 2.2 firmware considerably slows down 3G and even drains the battery by up to 4 times faster(!). Some of them confirmed the first fact by comparing two handsets side-by-side, one of which was running an older firmware version.

We'll wait for the official confirmation on both symptoms.

Nokia Europe has released software updates for its E66 and E71 handsets, bumping the versions to 110.07.126 and 110.07.127 respectively. Improvements of the latest build include the addition of Mail For Exchange, Nokia Maps, and some performance tweaks.

We recommend you to backup your data before applying the update. You know, just in case something goes wrong.

Folks from the iPhone Dev Team have managed to jailbreak the the second beta of the iPhone 2.2 firmware, which hasn't even been release yet. They say that Apple still doesn’t have a fix for devices that can be easily owned, such as iPhone. As a proof of their deed they’ve posted a screenshot, which you see here.

The new iPhone 2.2 Beta 2 firmware has been recently seeded to developers. The upcoming build includes support for hardware accessories, as well as the addition of Google Street Views to the handset's built-in Maps application, option to turn off the iPhone's text auto-correction, and support for Japanese emoticons.
