HTC to focus on lower-end devices this year

HTC co-founder and chairperson Cher Wang said the vendor’s problem last year was “concentrating on [its] flagship.” Wang went on to add they’ve missed the big opportunity in China to offer a more affordable device costing around or less than $150.This year, however, we should see many new affordable HTC phones launching all around the world. In the U.S. and Europe, HTC will focus its efforts on the M8 and its Mini/Maxi variants, whereas users in other parts of the world will get any number of low-cost HTC devices in addition to the flagship.

Verizon’s Droid DNA can get the latest version of Android, though it isn’t the official update and you’ll rather have to “manually” cram KitKat to your Droid DNA smartphone. As part of the deal, you’ll also get HTC’s Sense UI version 5.5, which will make the DNA look like the One.The firmware is described as stable, running on the Linux 3.4.18 kernel. The ROM does not come pre-rooted, but this shouldn’t be a problem because you can simply root it after installation.

HTC M8 Possible Release date

HTC M8 Possible Release date

Rumor has it that the M8 smartphone might end up being called the HTC One+ or the HTC One 2, possibly subtle indicators of the fact that the M8 is going to be a rather incremental update. Its possible that HTC may follow last year’s procedure, unveiling the HTC M8 a week or so before the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona, that kicks off in the last week of February. If all goes according to plan, and the company doesn’t face any manufacturing issues this time around, the new HTC flagship might be released to customers before the end of Q1, 2014.

HTC's new M8 may have four color versions

According to a couple of tweets from XDA TV producer and moderator Shen Ye, the upcoming HTC M8 may have four color versions at launch - black, red, blue and grey.Unfortunately, there is still no word on exactly when the M8 will be released. HTC could officially announce it in February or March, but we don’t know if it will call it HTC One+, or HTC One 2.M8 would be HTC’s first smartphone to come with on-screen buttons - this might allow it to be as large as the current One model, despite the fact that the new handset should sport a larger display (5-inch, 1080 x 1920 pixels).
