KDDI's researchers have managed to boost infrared transfer speeds from a theoretical limit of 4Mbps to 1Gbps, thanks to a new kind of semi-conductor laser that blinks faster than other LED systems. They have also increased the stability of a data transfer by using a larger piece of non-volatile memory. According to KDDI, a whole CD could be copied to a PC or phone in less than a second.
