New Symbian UI with improved widgets, smaller status bar and more

Nokia has apparently showcased a brand new Symbian UI during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The improvements include a smaller status bar, better widgets which are no longer confined to their small rectangular enclosure and new buttons at the bottom of the screen.

This Nokia N8 from the image above is running the new UI, hinting us a firmware update is / may be coming soon.

Samsung Galaxy S II is getting dual-purposed MHL port for USB or HDMI out

There is one important fact about Samsung Galaxy S II announced the last week at MWC.

It is going to be the first smartphone featured with a MHL port (Mobile High-Definition video Link "standard" promoted by Nokia, Samsung, Toshiba, Sony, and Silicon Image ).

MHL port features internal circuitry that recognizes USB or MHL impedance and then automatically switches the phone into USB data / charging or MHL audio / video / charging modes.

Huawei IDEOS X3 announced at MWC 2011

A new Huawei IDEOS X3 is an Android 2.3 phone but it is not a Google Experience device, this smartphone runs a custom skin on top of Gingerbread.

It features a 3.2-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen, Qualcomm MSM7227 CPU (600 MHz), 256MB of RAM, 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, front-facing camera, WiFi b/g/n, and dualband HSPA plus quadband EDGE radios, all powered by a 1200mAh battery.

Alcatel unveils Onetouch 990 at the MWC 2011

At the MWC 2011 Alcatel has announced its flagship Onetouch 990 which runs Android 2.2.

It features a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, WiFi, 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen.

Sadly, the device is very slow and seems like it hangs on to everything you try to do.

Another dual-screen Android phone announced at MWC 2011

Fujitsu revealed its own dual-screen handset at MWC 2011.

This device comes in a portait vibe with certain "options". The prototype has dual swivel screens, making for portrait, landscape, or a little of both.

It is running Symbian at the moment but in summer Fujitsu is going to replace it with Android.

HTC Advantage Upgraded

HTC Advantage fans will be glad to hear this. HTC has unveiled the updated version of its Advantage smartphone at the Mobile World Congress.

Here's a list of changes made:

  • 16GB of storage instead of 8GB;
  • Different haptic feedback keyboard;
  • Opera Mobile 9 Browser;
  • Google Maps;
  • A new version of VueFLO using a G-sensor that recognizes the screen orientation;
  • HTC TouchFLO software for easier finger navigation;
  • HTC Home Today screen.

Gigabyte MS800 Smartphone at MWC

Gigabyte presented a couple of new G-Smart series handsets at the MWC show today, one of which was the MS800.

It is a 3.5G-capable GPS-enabled smartphone powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 OS. The release is scheduled on Spring 2008.

More MS800 specifications:

  • Marvel 520MHz PXA270 CPU;
  • Quad-band GSM (850/900/180/1900);
  • UMTS (2100), HSDPA (2100MHz) at 7.

Today at Mobile World Congress LG has unveiled yet another cell phone, the LG KB620.

It is a TV-enabled 3G clamshell with an integrated DVB-H receiver, internal antenna, and support for HSDPA 7.2Mbps, providing lightning fast data speeds.

BenQ T80 and T60 Smartphones Unveiled at MWC

BenQ presented its two new smartphones at MWC, the NFC-capable T80 and the lower-end T60.

The first model features a 2.2" display, 3Mpix camera, microSD slot, uses Near Field communication technology, and is DLNA compliant.

The T60 is an ordinary smartphone equipped with a 2Mpix camera and the largest screen among all handsets thinner than 10mm.
